4 weeks and 4 camera adapters later, extensive apple HQ monitoring this iPad all good they said.

Conclusion camera powered adapters work with all of my USB 2 self powered hard drives.

Yet all adapters failed with USB 3 needing power.

I'm not sure what iPad you have (I can't watch the video right now), but I've had no issues with my ipad Pro 11" and several hard drives using my Kingston usb hub (both powered and non-powered at times). USB3 HDD, USB3 SSD, USB 3 Thumb drives, SD cards.

The lightning port iPad's are more restrictive.

Bill is your “ Kingston usb hub ” powered at the wall ?

Also “ lightning port iPad's are more restrictive“ can you expand your working knowledge upon this statement please.

I only ask as the genius dudes and manager at Apple made no mention about lightning port restrictions?

Any working knowledge would be very useful, do watch the video, listen and maybe your able to give me some answers.

Ps I have found a faster and more practical method for the purpose of drag and drop both ways using a not pro tablet.
I make a video and share, maybe of some use to you and others.

Regards Rob

I am no expert by any means, and I only did testing using my USB-C iPad Pro (everything works). USB-C provides much more power than lightning and I think it moved data faster as well. In my case, I can use the hub using just power from the ipad (with both an SSD and HDD attached), or I can power it.

From what I've read (I haven't tried personally), you MUST use the apple camera dongle for most usb connected things to the lightning port and it MUST be powered. Even some thumb drives won't work unless it's used the apple dongle and it's powered. Most of my knowledge about lightning connected drives comes from the few YouTube videos I watched:)

Rob, do you have the USB 3 camera connection dongle or the USB 2 version? I don't have access to youtube at the moment but search for videos on this subject by "Average Tech Guy", very informative.

Interesting reply Bill,

I bought a camera adapter powered version in the Apple store, I had choice in the matter.
Or any mention would I like a USB 2/3 adapter.
I learning more all the time, I check out the suggested channel now.
Thank you Bill.

Regards Rob
