Is the time to edit files directly from an external drive, finally arrived?
Hope so. Want to have my workflow simplified. Help us, please ........ hahahahahahah

I plan on buying it mainly for using LF. I make YT music gear performance videos so better syncing will be most welcome. Don’t know if the MultiCam sync will be of any benefit to me since each camera is recording to it’s own storage/drive. I would love to see more effects though and more options/configurations for each effect since I love making abstract video art/visuals.

Do you, LumaTouch have any idea if it’s fine to get the 8 GB Ram version (128-512 GB versions)?
The 1 TB and 2 TB versions are really expensive and perhaps unnecessary?

Any size should work

With the caveat of if you're going to work with huge files then bigger is better

File sizes will get bigger with 6k and no doubt 8k video

With a smaller one there may be more 'offloading existing projects' to make space

Thanks Dave I’m not using large files at all - mostly recording from my iPhone 12 Pro and my GoPro H8. Mainly HD and maybe 4K at most.
In this case do you think it will be worth upgrading to the M1 iPad at all?

How long is a piece of string? :D :D

I've got the latest iPad Air 256

The longest videos I edit are about an hour

but

I've not got many apps on it and I rarely use more than 3 tracks of 4k

I do archive my projects and media regularly and just pull them in when I need them

I have the 2TB one on order. Yes it is expensive, but I am planning on using it for the next four to five years at least. The main reason I’m upgrading my current 2017 iPad Pro is because I want more memory, and I would rather make one large jump now than a couple of smaller jumps over the same time period.

Also, I do music recording as well, and some of the sample libraries I use are huge.

Yes, the option of working from an external Thunderbolt drive directly is a wonderful option, but that negates much of the convenience of working from an iPad.

This is my situation, too… i think i’m on a 2018 ipad pro, 12.9” 512gb and i do music too… 2tb memory is absolutely ideal for the multimedia content creator…

Hello jackfancy,

Here are my thoughts.
Currently you're have probably 4 to 6 gigs or RAM.
Apps use max 5 gigs of Ram - the IOS or OS uses another ...

The 1 TB has 16 gigs of Ram, which is not utilised at this point in time 2021.

I think the only advantage here is a Tax loss.
Or probably no need to buy an adapter to plug something in.
Like a HD, so you can save money here.

Shame about the loss of head phone jack for the purpose of music, suspect on blue tooth it say something about delays in audio.
As it would say in garage band using blue tooth headphones.

Personally I just buy the bigger HD - As Dave said back up, off load projects to another source.
Maybe a faster home cloud could be a solution.
Your have a good 4 TB wi fi home cloud for ooh £200 quid !

As Vidiot says,

"Yes, the option of working from an external Thunderbolt drive directly is a wonderful option, but that negates much of the convenience of working from an iPad."

I would agree here, I kind of done with cables other than a charging cable, when working off a tablet environment.

Desktop you have as many ports and plug things in. And all the wires sit out the way, neat and tidy.
Plus you never have to go looking for them.

Oh thunderbolt drives some work and some do not with newer tablets says apple.
But all needs power, which the iPad cannot deliver.

let us all know what you buy and how you get on.
Ps what audio apps are you finding work best for you?

Regards Rob
