Somehow in moving house I seem to have lost my old camera. I only used it for occasional videos where I needed a long zoom, eg wildlife. Most times my phone is my go to videocamera.
Ideally small as possible, fast to start, and compatible with LumaFusion/Apple. No longer interested in still photography. Anyone can do that

Interesting question Mark,

I been looking at options myself.
For me I probably going for a new camera and use my existing lens.
This is for filming.
Re pocket and zoom video recording, I thinking gimbal and pocket Osmo, I know there are macro third party attach lens.
Maybe have a look for an zoom for the Osmo pocket.

Also see techmoan type into browser, he does reviews on cameras mainly in the pocket camera areas.
I like to hear what you decide upon when you buy please.

Ps today in the park a fox came up and sat with my wife and I.
Pocket Osmo out and filming, gimbal smooth I hope.

Of course I’m hoping for a long super zoom that I could put in my pocket. Hardly likely. You yourself don’t need one because foxes just come right up to you! Best I get is fantails which will sometimes even sit for a moment on a stick if you hold it still. Unfortunately they won’t stop flitting about.

I’m often asked in my job, which reserve parachute do you advise me to buy from you Rob.
It depend upon the situation conditions, height at the moment your require to deploy is my answer.

Thinking about this made me think of pocket cameras etc Mark.
The one you have in your pocket is the best one you have.
Sadly that not such an accurate account of a day out filming.

When I used to do a lot of macro filming, I once took someone along.
They complained about the patience and set up and constantly re positioning of tripod and following the subjects.
(wild life)

So my point is I got what I was looking for in my day out of macro filming.
Mainly due to preparing ahead, I knew the limitations of the kit, very short focus and depths of field.
But I always came back with a gem of a shot, something I could work with.

A friend photographer said to me that large lump of a lens allows loads of light in where as these new digital SD cards allow for pin hole photography = poor light.

I think the best your have is a small camera with extending len.
My friend does have a small Pentax which he carries, it’s like tiny in his big hands.
He also carries a 200 mm lens in his pocket, which appears quick and easy to change.

Thanks Rob. I love your parachute analogy. Kinda puts things in perspective! Yes I think you are right. The best for me would probably be a small long zoom camera. It might not have great low light capabilities but it’s only going to be used occasionally outdoors. My big problem will be having it with me at the right time.

I very much liked your video last year, changing of the guards in Edinburgh i think ?
Mark you shot this on your phone i believe ?
What i liked about the video besides the angle, was shot in bad light and sharpness was retained and colour.

Might be worth a search for camera phone with extending lens.
The company Red (They make cameras for the likes of Mr Lucas ) they went into mobile phones, they did produce a mobile phone with some performance. Red did not produce an attachment for camera lens. This was what i was waiting for with F stops.

Around the same time a phone shop here in UK showed a phone with a built in none removable extending lens.
Which i think did come to market eventually.

I ended up buying a small gimbal and even this i needed to wait for ( Too new tech )
I like to think the market just new at small gimbals and camera lens attachments to your phone.
Big part of this will be R and D = profit ? Would an attached lens make users upgrade.

With so many into apps and not the real deal, i probably be nice to design my own phone with the purpose of attaching a small 50 mm lens.
This is one area i will look into over time.

Here’s a list of my wish list for a camera suited for mobile editing.

Built in screw thread for a tripod.
Connectivity to PC or Mac no restrictions 1 GIG data transfer at 30 seconds. (Without removing the card - Osmo Pocket USB-C 12 megs by cable ! )
Attachment of my own lens this could be maybe step up rings or zoom lens.
Control over F Stops.

240 FPS at 1080p
Zoom in and out while on Robs/camera/phone on a tripod using the ear phone jack - + buttons.

Mark add some to the list if i missed any useful features please.

Why not take a look at supplementary lenses for your phone if it’s only for occasional use?
I have been looking at/interested in a range called “moment lenses” which are quite expensive in my view but there are others available but of course quality may not be the same.

I recently bought a Sony RX100 M7 which has fantastic focus and a pretty decent zoom (200mm). Not really been able to test it’s capabilities due to lockdown, but looking forward to when I can.

Unfortunately zoom photography/video doesn’t come cheap!

Thanks guys for the posts. My problem is that I only want very occasional super zoom for wildlife. 99% of the time my iPhone does everything I need and effectively I can get 4x with the 2x lens and shooting 4K for 1080 projects.
Because it’s relatively rare I don’t want to spend much and I won’t normally be carrying a zoom camera around just in case. You can get super zoom clip on lenses for phones but they appear to be awkward to carry/fit and long zooms give poor quality.
I’ve used some reward card points to order a cheaper old model Panasonic thingy but unfortunately it keeps getting delayed. Coming from Japan now apparently 1080 will do and I’ll always do the zoom on a bean bag for stability. Fingers crossed.
Glad you liked my Edinburgh tattoo video Rob. Yeah I was amazed that it came out so well in the conditions although of course my editing with LumaFusion was brilliant
