Hello Bill and Tony,

Many thanks for the information as it all adds to a potential graph for users.
Interesting Tony that more than enough power does not support HDD’s.
Reminds me of the Mac book pro does not support some of my older portable HDD’s, apparently not enough power sign comes up.
Mac mini it worked fine.

Tony glad you have your bargain sorted.
If you can I would like to know the speed to write to the SSD from your iPad please?

Regards Rob

Hello all,

Newbie here. I was trying to connect my external HDD (toshiba and WD) to my ipad 2018 but both failed. I thought it was the format but when I changed NTFS to exFat, the ipad still did not read the hd. I have no problem with Flash drives and as said by Tony I would love to buy and try SSD if it works as well on an ipad 2018 but will have to wait since it does not come cheap here in the Philippines. For now I have to stick to usb sticks.

Regards

If you have a powered USB hub that you can plug into the Apple USB 3 Camera connector it will probably work. In other words:

iPad > Apple USB 3 Camera Dongle (may need to be powered also) > Powerered USB Hub > HDD Hard Drive.

I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it should work. I don't think the apple dongle allows enough power to the HDD, I've tried up to 18w.

Yes, I noticed that my ipad is saying it requires more power to run hdd.

Yes my setup is - Ipad>usb camera dongle powered> Usb hub not powered.

I guess I need to buy a usb hub that is powered so I have to try it again.

Is a 5v adapter powered usb hub enough? Sorry there is no amazon here in the Philippines and the shipping cost is expensive.

But will this power hub enough?

Hello person named ngeyobslash,

Bit late in here with advise for you.
However a shop in Singapore (Www.Challenger.com.sg) (Challenger Technologies Limited)
Do sell maybe in a price range that would suit you as well as a reduced Tax import duty for sending to Philippines.

Bill has tested in depth now HHD and SSD and I agree with him on the following.

Most but not all SSD will work with a powered camera adapter. ( in my case USB Sand disks 2019 did not work)

Older styles of spinning HD’s will not work, unless they have there own power supply. ( IN my case a Stardom self powered worked)

I would look for a YouTube video where a man uses a powered USB hub called Anchor- (incorrect spelling)
He plugged in WD elements into apple camera powered adapter and it failed. (WD came on then off)

He then repeated the tests using the Anchor powered unit and WD elements did then work.
My only concerns are ngeyobslash, you buy USB Hub powered and you then find your drives do not work.

I mention this as my mac book pro says on a USB none powered drive I have, yes you guess it “not enough power “ !

Sadly apple says the computer says it works.
This was asked in store and they said yes, when I presented the apple store with iPad and my collection of HD’s that worked with some apple powered camera adapters.

They went off to get the manager and end results I was advised to contact apple and offer my findings.
I smiled and never went back.

Reminds me of the latest mac book pro re call’s due to expanding batteries and fire issues, I think these are now disallowed on some planes of not all.

I would be very great full once you do have a working solution to share your experiences here please.

PS the only other option that maybe of interest to you is.

WD mycloud work’s on Wi Fi and physical in put hard wired Ethernet port.
This might actually be a cheaper option for you.
Plus you can plug in the other HD’s in the rear of the USB port.

I often do this and piggy back all my other drives. (Including the 2019 USB Sand disk which would not work on IPad’s Gen 1 and Gen 2)

Last thought I just had a call come through I plugged in my sennheiser blue tooth head phones, using the headphone jack.
With the power off the Sennheiser head phones, they work on IPP first gen.

I thought it say Not enough power :)

Regards Rob

That is a painful experience to learn.
If you could post which power supply and the HD.
You say you have a WD - which one please.

I think you have a modern iPad Pro ? USBC ?

So to help others from mistakes, time expenses do share your knowledge please.
You have only been on the forum for a short time and you have delivered knowledge helping others, good on you.

Regards Rob
