Crop values mathematically work with imported videos and screenshots. The 50.0 (%) value equals the midline when dragged.
However, when the video is resized, how am I suppose to determine the midline (or top, left, right, bottom border, etc)? I’ve done ‘custom’ settings that allows me to quickly size imported videos to fit how I initially want, but often the video has objects that requires custom set videos to need minor resizing again. In such cases, crop values need to be manipulated, but there’s no way to mathematically determine the exact amount need to crop left, right, top or bottom ... other than inaccurate visual inspection.

Is there an accurate work around for when the user resized the video inside luma? Why doesn’t luma simply default crop values to only the visible sections of the video inside the luma window?

I stumbled onto the invert crop function .... that may help with precise split screen when videos are resized.

Edit 2: couldn’t get the vid tutorial effect to do what I wanted, so I simply resorted to creating a reusable overlay that would sit on top of all clips. (I used a blue color here simply to show it in action. Final project will have it black.) This does not solve the crop value vs video resize however.

After fiddling with things,

A successful fairly simple workaround for resized videos to ensure crop videos has consistent accurate consistent mathematical border values (for the purposes of split screens, etc) is to:

1) Export video, then import video. Now video max top, bottom, left and right borders all have the default 0.0 value.
2) Create a opacity ‘shape’ and use that to gauge accurate dimensions in combination with those crop values.
3) Can also invert shape if desired (under the crop value section)

Even though the method I’m using (export, import) works, it still bugs me why the output video window doesn’t have its own set of ‘crop values’. If the output video window is essentially the most important ....

So after fiddling with it some more and putting more thought into a work around solution, I’ve settled on something that works so split screens have absolute precision and accuracy — use the left most video output border as the starting reference point. This will require video clip export as a part of the process, and I no longer have to do x- and y- axis coordinate guesstimates. The video omits using the a custom setting option, but once you get the crop area to your desired specifications, then set it for faster work flow.
