Rob,

I would love to see your workflow in the future on how you produce your podcast from scratch to finish.

I thought Lumafusion is enough to edit audio then I see you mention Ferrite and hokusai.

I see that both are great but what is the difference of using one from the other?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,
Slash

Hi @all

Im new to this forum.

I need a small (cheap) solution for doing voiceover with my usb-c iPad Pro.

Did not find any usb-c microphones which I can plug in directly.

Do you have any recommendations for me?

Thanks

Ichbins

Hello Ichbins,

Here is my thoughts, first the iPad you have does this version have a microphone on the front ?
Mine is on the back why unknown, 2018 versions have one on the front.

Also mics that fit into usbc, I say avoid until you can assure yourself of quality.
Mics here are centred in one fixed location.
Being the USB-c port, so straight away if looking at the screen making voice overs, your be drawn to the mic, which is sticking out away from user.

Just visual think of a DJ , mics are always in front of the person speaking.

Options for blue tooth, milliseconds delays as were still using old tech. 4.1 Bluetooth- Bluetooth 5 is available but not in headphones and mics, why .....

Also apps and annoying apps.(some mics only work with the app so become redundant for use in LF)

LF has functions more for the hardwired mics.

After all of this, I would suggest cheapness and quality will come down to the following.

1. Another horrible adapter to a headphone jack.
2. Bouyer mic costs around £18 on line.

If you have a USB mic from a desktop computer, you might be able to work this with a camera powered adapter.
That is a big maybe as many people say it works others say no it did not work.
No one can give straight answers on powered mics.

If you have a Apple shop near you, do what I do.
I buy item in store, sit in store fit items, if it does not work, I return the purchased items same day.
(apple offer this up to 14 days return policy)

By the way I return a lot of items, staff general say it should work, but you can return items.
I can confirm OS using logic tech usb mic says not enough power.

Using a proper computer it works fine.
My accountant often questions my purchases and refunds on the same day :)
Oh and so does Apple now.

So Ichbins, any knowledge you gleam from your own findings please do share with us all.
Last thoughts you can end up spending a lot in mics and learning.

Regards Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your detailed answers.

I got an iPad Pro 11 3. Generation with 5 built-in mics. One in the middle but sidewise.

This model with only the usb-c port.

When I do Voiceover it sounds like I am in a church...

My solution right now: I lift up the iPad near my mouth. But this isn’t comfortable.

Yesterday I bought a usb-c hub from Kingston Nucleum with 2 usbc ports. That’s the only one with 2 of these ports, one for power. It’s a 7in1 costs around 50€. I watched a YT video which recommends this for this iPad model.
But it doesn’t work. Returned it.

Until nobody else got a perfectly working solution I will follow your advice and visit my nearby applestore.

That will be best not to waste to much money.

Merry Christmas 🎄 and kind regards

Ichbins

Hello Ichbins,

I was due meet a client in Brighton yesterday, the Apple store was near by so I called in and asked a few questions on your behalf about mics.

The reception person said he required to call the audio master, audio master came over and we chatted.
He said he was a musician DJ and knew the best set up for iPad and mics.
I said that is perfect here is the problem what solution can you offer on a USB-C mics.

He recommended this mic they sell, Shure MOTIV MV5 Digital Condenser Microphone.
I sighed and he asked why.

Connection is lightning not USB-C, I responded and suggested he as a musician claiming that the iPad was the best unit for recording music and use of a mic.
To simply tell me which mic he uses, he not allowed to do that he says.

So I would say he uses another mic and it is not an apple in store product.
I kind of felt this is a repeat of my HD experiences, I said to the man.

He then went onto claim I was wrong and every HD works with OS 13 and I was incorrect.
Oh boy I left the store, their lack of working knowledge is vast.
Maybe you're have better experiences Ichbins in your area I would like to think.

Brighton more, buy new phone makes me look cool, do not ask questions.

I did look later at mics and here is the only mic on apple store that will work in a USB-c port.
Apogee HypeMiC Microphone. £399 and it is yours.

All other mics on apple store are lightning ports only, you maybe have to buy an adapter to make it work, as a possible solution.

I also read on line, others people experiences and it would appear, most if not all, say this.
In order to get the best out of a mic you're require its own power supply.

So Ichbins,

Here is a challenge for you, maybe call apple store where you live.
Make sure they offer this return policy as in UK.
Test out the mics in store with LumaFusion and let us all know please.

One other area you maybe like to explore, Ichbins, is your local music shop.
I did this last year here in Brighton, they sell drums, guitars etc.
All the staff are tripping with imagination as they have a passion for the products they sell.

They even said why not bring in your iPad and were set up some mics and test it out.
I can still remember their enthusiasm now.
One area I noticed was if they did not know the answer, they said so.

Apple store more of a, well buy item and if it does not work let us know and bring it back sir.

Good luck with your mission Ichbins :)
I very much look forwards to your findings.

Ps this mic would probably suit you for your needs.
You would need an adapter for head phone to make this work on iPad USB-c

Search for BOYA BY-M1 3.5 mm Lavalier Microphone - costs around £18

Regards Rob
