Dear all,

I am after some ideas from personal experiences with microphones and iPad Pro / ipad.

Generally I did all my work on a desk top and with mic for recordings, now I am working from a iPad Pro, mic quality is poor for my needs.

I have seen apples very cheap adapter for camera with power, allows USB such as a mic, simple head phone type of jack plugs into your ipad.

To a proper mic £229 which will actually work from the head phone jack and plugs into a proper mixer.

So for my needs I do voice over on videos and a weekly weather video, the voices overs need to be clear enough sound. But we are talking youtube not pod cast levels here.

Has anyone used have expertise in the 3 diffent type of mics above, advice welcome.

Regards Rob

I use a Rode TRRS cable and attach my Rode VideoMic Pro. Works flawlessly.

Many thanks Kevin and Colin for your input and advise.

I have included some images may help others in the future.

I have re edited this page to make it simple for others to read.

Bottom line any mics with lightning ports would not fit the ipad due to the case.
Ear phone mics that fit into the ear phone socket same issue.

Rob,

You did a lot of research which is awesome, I did the same. There can be many setups and rigs that can be put together but with a case on your iPad or iPhone it can be challenging to have a mic that is supposed to be fully inserted into the lighting connector fit properly.
So what I did was buy a Ulanzi tripod mount each for IPhone and iPad. Then used the included hotshoe to mount the Rode Videomic pro and connect with the TRRS cable to the headphone jack. My iPad Pro and iPhone 6s Plus have the headphone jack.

As for the iPhone 7 and up without the headphone jack, when I decide to ever upgrade I know they sell a lighting to headphone jack converter.

See attached photo for my not so beautiful setup but fully functional. I also have an external recorder attached for when I need more than perfect sound. Since you mention windy and outdoor situations, a deadcat on the microphone will cut on wind noise and audio clipping.

BTW no limitations on apps it can used with. Works like internal mic when connected mic to TRRS to iPhone or iPad. If you buy Rode Video Mic Pro just adjust settings on mic to -20db or keep at zero. Use at higher +20db and you’ll clip excessively. Point mic to subject as it’s a directional mic.

Hope I was able to help!

Hello Kevin,

Thanks for the picture and information.
Pictures explain more, so easy to see what you have achieved.

Steep, annoying, learning curve for me, bottom line all mics sold need to be flush fit.

I did enquire to a lightning extender at Apple store, this is involves asking one person who directs you to the correct area.

Pressing his ear piece and talking to the agent, the Matrix story went on with a final descion no.

So if anyone knows of an suitable extender just enough to clear the case, please post here.
Or maybe someone will make one and sell it need to be male to female.

Regards Rob

Plenty of Lightning extender cables on Amazon if that is what you are looking for?

Hi Adept,

Sounds great if you found the item I need, please post after reading below.

Here are some images which may help explain.

The item i am after is to extend the mic to avoid an interference fit to the ipad while a cover is in place.

(I am not after a floppy cable where the mic swings in the wind)

Ah, okay so you are looking for an extension to plug the 3.5mm microphone into a lightning port? I've maybe missed the point here but if you are using an iPad, are you not just looking to plug it directly into the headphone port?

If you need to plug it into Lightning though, there are plenty of adaptors and if you need additional reach to secure the microphone in a more appropriate location, you could use a combination of a Lightning extender cable and a Lightning to 3.5mm adaptor.

Extender cables:

Lightning to 3.5mm:

Here is a quick but rough sketch re what I like.

Extension for the lightning jack to allow the mics to connect, the extension not to be on wires as the mic then flops about in the wind.

Thank you for the links you posted “Adept” looking through them now, 25 pages so hoping to find the solutions for the extender.

Hopefully the images make some sense of what I am wishing to achieve.

Regards Rob
