Hello Damion

Yes, it is possible to change the speed of a clip within the LumaFusion app.
You can slow a clip down or speed a clip up.

Hope this helps

I am trying to slow motion parts of a drone video. However, I find the end result is jerky and not a smooth slow motion.

What could I be doing wrong both in the recording and editing settings?

Hi Pagemakers

I'm assuming your original footage from the drone is smooth

See what frame rate it is taken at

Your project needs to be output at the frame rate of the original video OR as close a multiple of it as you can

So if for example your original is 25 fps and you output at 30 fps you will introduce jerkiness because there are odd frames

The same is true for speed so if you slow a 25 fps video by 50% and output your final video at 25fps it will appear less jerky than if you output it at 60 fps

I'm not sure I've done a great job at explaining that?!? but try to keep the multiples even

If you shoot at the highest fps you can originally (I can get 60 fps at a low resolution on my drone) you start with more frames per second and can throw more away later

It took merges to get my head around this

I took train videos (not with a drone) at 25 fps and output them at 30 fps expecting them to be smooth - I ended up with a load of videos 'filmed in jerkyvision'

knobbydave Thank you for your reply.

Looking at the Mavic Pro drone settings it looks like it was recorded at 24 or 25 FPS. In the LumaTouch app I have 30FPS and I find the slow motion a little jerky. If I change the settings in LumaTouch to 24 or 25FPS it makes the non-slow motion parts jerky and I see no real improvement in the slow motion sequences.

Hello Pagemakers

Knobbydaves explaination is quite accurate, but let me add some notes

If you shoot video at 25fps and you have your LumaFusion project set to 25fps, then everything is just normal and good.

Now, if you slowdown a clip in LumaFusion to 50% then LumaFusion will duplicate each frame in playback so each frame plays twice as long. That gives you the slowmo. But the project is still at 25fps.

Now, if you change the project to something else, lets say you change it to 30fps, you have a combination of things going on. You have a slowmo and you have a change of frame rate in the project.

For a clip that is not slowed, LumaFusion will have to add 5 extra frames every second to allow playback at 30fps. These extra frames produce the jerkyiness that you describe. For the slowed footage which is already playing every frame twice, you will have every 5th frame play twice as long as that, so the jerkiness will appear even more pronounced.

So the questions are: what is the frame rate of the footage and what is the frame rate of the project?

Hoping that this explaintion helps you. Let us know

Regards

Androu Morgan

Hi Androu

That explanation was very helpful (I'm still learning too)

Thanks
