My apologies if this has already been covered. I searched the forums and didn't find the answer to my exact question.

I shoot video with my Sony a6000 in XAVC S 1080p. As of right now, I cannot upload this video to my iPad Pro using an SD card reader, the lightning to USB dongle with USB to micro plugged into my camera, or the Sony Play Memories app.

My ultimate goal is to travel for weeks sometimes months at a time without having access to a computer and using an iPad Pro as my only editing device. If I purchase this app, is there a way to import XAVC S video files without having to convert them? Specifically, will I be able to import XAVC S video into Luma Fusion into my iPad Pro using Apple's proprietary SD to lightning dongle, something I cannot do now with iMovie or Photos?

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

hello idbloom

the short answer is no, you won't be able to do it. The iPad and all other iOS devices will only support .mp4 and .mov files.

I had a quick look at the app store on my iPad and couldn't find anything that would handle the conversion from XAVC S to mp4.

It seems like the only way to do it is to carry a laptop that would handle the conversion for you (i did find apps for mac that would do the conversion).

Thank you for the reply. I was hoping there would be a similar solution as there is with Lightroom Mobile importing raw still images.

I've heard mixed results but am rolling the dice with the solution offered here. For <$20, I'm willing to gamble.

[/It is possible to import 4K Sony XAVC-S footage directly into an iPad Pro but the process requires a few extra steps and a 3rd party SD card reader.

As you know, Apple doesn't directly support the XAVC-S file structure (as of iOS10) so you can't use the Apple SD Card reader. The Apple USB adapter is problematic because of power issues between the iPad and the camera.

However, XAVC-S uses an MP4 wrapper (creates mp4 video files) which the iPad can play and you can extract them using a 3rd party lightning to SD card reader.

Here's what I do:

I bought an "iReader" Lightning to SD card reader made by YKSH from Amazon.com. I'm sure there are others but this was $20 and had 4.5 star rating. It's kind of like Apple's SD reader.

The trick to the process is the card reader needs an app that supports file browsing through all folders on an SD card. It also needs to be able to copy files to the camera roll on the iPad.

I plug the SD card into the reader then plug the reader into the iPad. Launch the app (in this case, it's called iDiskk Pro) then navigate to PRIVATE/M4ROOT/CLIP subfolder. This is where the XAVC-S 4K files are stored (they're saved as MP4 files). I select the files I want to import then add them to the camera roll.

From there, you can use the files like any other video on the iPad...view them, import them into iOS iMovie, etc. Works well and the reader is pretty fast at copying.

I have an iPad Pro 12" but also tried on my iPad Air 2 and it worked.

Will do. I'll report back on it later this week.

I have seen folks on YT upload XAVCS 1080p directly from their RX100 to an iPad using the MTP setting for their USB and utilizing the lightning to USB dongle, and then USB to micro cable into their camera, but they have an additional menu option to modify the power setting for the USB where it won't trigger an error and put the camera in suspended animation as it does with my a6000. I'll double check later tonight but 99% sure I'm running the most current firmware update for the a6000.

I remain cautiously optimistic.

A friend of mine uses this solution for his Sony 4K Action Camera. It works for him. I think there is an MP4 file in the XAVC container, which can be imported using the iReader hardware and app.

Not ideal, but it works. Good luck.
