This is my tip for connecting H/D to an iPad Pro - don't bother :)
Unless it is usb 2 and has its very own power.

4 camera adapters and loads of walking back and fourth to apple HQ -
Ipad was connected to apple tech over the wire for 24 hrs and all passed.

Either I very un lucky with camera adapters or something up.

The problem is the older lightning cable design, not the iPad Pro.

The lightning cable was never designed to carry power like this. That's why Apple switched over to using USB-C on the new Pros.

All new iPad Pros can use hard drives without external power with iPadOS 13.0 and above.

To use a lightning cable without using a external power supply you need to use a LaCie DJI Copilot hard drive.

It it specially made for the use of a lightning cable and has it's own built in power. The drive itself is 2 TB.

You can also connect an older (non USB-C) iPad Pro to a hard drive with a device called RAVPower FileHub.

Keep in mind that the drive must be formatted in a format that the iPad can read. Most WD drives are formatted NTFS and will NOT be seen by any iPad app. You must format the drive into one of the Apple formats, or best yet, into exFAT which can be seen by both Windows and Apple machines. You can only format these drives on a computer, not on the iPad.

For instance, I had to reformat my WD MyPassport Wireless Pro with exFAT so it can be seen. I use it in wired mode to my iPad Pro instead of wireless....much, much faster when wired. I connect it through a Hyperdrive iPad Pro hub to my 11” iPad Pro (2018). Works beautifully and consistently....much better than wireless.

You will not get any indication that your drive is in the wrong format from the iPad. It just won’t show up, ever.

Hello to both of you,

Thank you for the posts, I have some questions maybe you can answer.

Firstly do you have the Rav unit?
Or are you using the video posted for the information?

Questions are.

1. Transfer speed is what ? Using the wi fi I suspect you can have 5 GHz on the rav ?
2. Why are jpegs only in thumb nail and none of the dng files ?

I did contact rav about plugging in Mac format drives, they said not supported so cancelled the order.
Just in case someone has this rav unit could you try a Mac formatted drive for me please.

Not sure if I mentioned in the video above, but I did try the SD cards in there original formatted being windows and iPad did recognise these SD cards.

I did format SD cards to Mac in the end.

Other questions about lightning cable you mentioned about not supported re power wise.

1. Why would Apple sell the product to me knowing it not work ?
2. Why did the WD my elements drive work one day but not another ?
3. Why would an older usb stick 16 gig work every time but a modern usb stick 64 gig fail most of the times ?
4. I plugged in a older usb drive to my laptop and it shows uses too much power.

Where did you find the information about the drives you say will work please ?
Is there a link to a list of all drives supported ?

Thank you
Regards Rob

Other questions is meg a bytes or meg a bit, see screen capture, is there a way to gauge speed transfer of say 10 gigs transfer to an iPad Pro ?

Just guessing here re wi fi cards are faster the more money you spend said a film editing company.
They spent 50 k on special wireless cards for the HD’s so all parties in other rooms could edit and play live on there desk top.
Play live not streaming, it is down load and done.

How would the iPad and rav work in this situation?

Newer rav quicker it appears also supports 5 GHz.

These questions really need to be answered by someone with the unit and a iPad please post information if you can help.

Looking into to RAV a bit deeper, this information may help clear up some answers I have posted.
Online stores that sell the Rav, they refer to Mb/s in their specs, presumably supplied by Rav, please read below.

I assume Rav have made a mistake ? in there spec's.

Mb/s is 8 times smaller than MB/s so if that is accurate then the speed they claim is about 1 MB per second

Megabits = Mb
Megabytes = MB

There are 8 Megabits (Mb) in a Megabyte (MB)

Regards Rob

No, but will probably get the LaCie DJI Copilot hard drive.

If it charges your iPad then it works. When lightning was designed this added functionality wasn't needed, so it wasn't added to the spec.

This usually happens because of an issue with the drive itself, not with what is trying to read it.

Check manufactures website and youtube videos.

I have the RavPower WD03, which I think is older and doesn't have the 5G connection. It's about 5 minutes per GB to transfer to the iPad (both ways). I think the 5G connection would be about half that time (maybe 3 minutes per GB), at least when I was researching a year or two back.

I find it very reliable, but slow.

One other thing to keep in mind, at least with my version, you have the ability to allow internet passthrough (you can be connected while transfering data). Howerver, this severely impacts the transfer speeds, even if you're not using the internet but just have the option turned on.
