Blue skies are great. Cloudy skies make exposure difficult. If you brighten up the clip generally then your skies will wash out to white. Playing with levels, shadows, highlights, gamma helps but not enough to get the clouds back.
In my photography days I used to love using a gradient filter in Photoshop to quickly darken the sky and you can do something similar in LumaFusion:
1. Adjust your clip if necessary for the main subject
2. Clone the clip to the track above
3. Adjust the top clip for the sky (don't worry about darkening the subject)
4. Crop the bottom edge of the top clip to about the horizon
5. Adjust the edge softness to make the edge blend gradually.
- Edge softness unfortunately affects all sides but in practice this isn't very obvious. It also doesn't show if the clips have been zoomed in a bit because usually only the bottom edge remains in the frame.
- Cloning 4K clips may seriously slow the preview so best leave this until after doing timing adjustments.
- You can copy and paste the general sky settings or make them a preset.
- Although in theory this only works with a nice horizontal sky line (LumaFusion can't crop at angles) you can usually get away with it. I've even cropped sideways with some success
- If the horizon moves during the clip this may not work without using tedious key framing.
Here's one I did with the sky clone cropped bottom and side.

Thanks for the tip!

Here is another option to retouch the sky using Chroma Key, straight from a LumaTouch tutorial.

One advantage is that you won’t need key frames to adjust for movement.

Check my LumaFusion tutorials:

Thanks for that. I should probably have mentioned it! I find the croma key method a little more fiddly and less effective with cloud detail but it is great for moving views and plainer skies. Best choose the method according to the clip. I’m always going for quick results to get my video out the same day. Maybe I should do a time comparison of the methods.
