Post subject:  Editing 360 Video

Thanks to two users in the Insta360 One Community Group on FaceBook, I was reminded that LumaFusion will allow me to import 360 video, edit clips, and add additional audio tracks. I did a search before making this post, but I didn’t uncover much discussion of this topic so I’m hoping some who have had success in doing this will jump in with their success stories!

So, my story: I recently got an Insta360 One camera and am excited about its uses in making travel and training videos. As a newbie to 360 but not to video editing, I have been very frustrated with my post production and sharing options. The VeeR VR Editor was just released today and answered some of my questions, but I’d love to be able to use LumaFusion for future 360 video projects.

My questions: (1) What are the correct settings for exporting a series of edited 360 clips? I know I need to set the Frame Aspect in Project Settings to 2:1. However, in the Export Settings I’m unclear about correct settings for 360° VR and Resolution. (2) Are there after-export things one must do to the file before it can be uploaded and shared? I understand that one must use the YouTube Spatial Injector tool available free from YT for Windows and Mac (nothing for mobile, apparently) to add 360 metadata to the file before uploading to YT. I was under the impression that wasn’t necessary for FaceBook, however, an edited video I just uploaded to FB doesn’t display in “true” 360 format.

Any help, guidance, or suggestions much appreciated!

OK, it’s true. I’m an idiot!

I should have known that Eliot Fitzroy would have already done a tutorial video on the 360 editing capabilities of LumaFusion! (https://youtu.be/1bhn6kao8cU) Thank you, Eliot!

On second thought, maybe I’m not an idiot!

Did something, perhaps, happen in LF versions after 1.3 RE working with 360 video? Following Eliot’s directions that you just need to set Frame Aspect to 2:1 in Project Settings and 360° VR to 360° Mono, I re-exported my 18-second video and reuploaded it to FaceBook. Still displaying flat which makes me believe that the 360 metadata isn’t being injected in exported file as Eliot says it is.

To be clear, I’m taking the Insta360 One Videos and downloading them to my iPhone 7 Plus’s Camera Roll. In LumaFusion, I’m selecting the clips from the Camera Roll to add to timeline. I’m using LumaFusionu version 1.4.5 on a 32GB iPhone 7 Plus with 12GBs of storage free.

Hi Bill,

Not sure why it's not working. Just did a quick test here using 1.4.5, dropped in a couple of clips into a 2:1 timeline, then exported to Facebook with default settings and VR set to 360 Mono.

I have seen Facebook be a little flaky about recognizing the metadata (not sure why), so it might be worth doing another try. When I exported it was at 1440p (2880 x 1440), 30 fps, Standard Quality (24 mbps), 44.1KHz audio, mpeg4 format, and 360 Mono.

Also, try uploading to Youtube and see if that works any differently.

If it still doesn't work, contact us at support@luma-touch.com and we'll have you send your project so we can see if we can reproduce with it.

Thank you, Chris!! Sorry for delay in responding. Just got a new 10.5 iPad Pro with Pencil and loving even more (if that's possible) how I can now edit in LumaFusion with it!!

When I exported a 360 video downloaded and converted to *.mp4 to my camera roll from the Insta360 One app, then imported that into LumaFusion, it worked IF I uploaded right to Facebook in the Export/Share panel. It did take a few minutes for FB to set it to 360, but it worked.

However, if I export/share out to my Photos camera roll, then upload to FB, it does not work, even (I think) if I use YT/Google Spatial Media Metadata Injector app to inject the 360 Metadata.

However, good to know that I CAN get it to work now!

Appreciate the follow-up, Chris!

Youtube and Facebook need to be told that you are shooting 360. Once the file is edited run it through Spatial Media Metadata Injector following these steps and it will be spherical. https://support.google.com/jump/answer/7044297?hl=en
