I know I can import audio files from online services such as Google Drive and Dropbox, but I have to have uploaded the audio files to those services first, naturally. I'm going to be on a trip without my computer and am trying to determine how to transfer MP3 files (or any audio file) to Box or Dropbox without a computer.

I sometimes use my Olympus recorder to record audio when filming with my iPhone and it's too far away to use my Røde SmartLav+. I have an Audio-Technica lavalier mic with a long cord so I do sometimes use that plugged into the iPhone, but there are times when that's not possible or practical.

My normal process is to record to the microSD card in recorder, transfer the file(s) from the card to Dropbox using my computer, then import into LumaFusion project. I have the SD card connector for my IOS devices but am only able - as far as I know - to transfer photos and videos using it. I have a WD MyPassport wi-fi hard drive to which I can transfer the files (and I'm taking it with me), but I have no way to then get it to an online service and LF, of course, doesn't "see" it.

I tried downloading the audio file from the drive to my iPad thinking it would go into the Music App but it didn't. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks, LumaLuke! Since I have the SanDisk iXpand drive, I went with that. Have only used the drive to copy files from one device to another and hadn't even noticed the share icon (box with arrow pointing up) when viewing files!

See that I can export right into LumaFusion or up to one of the online services, so when off somewhere with no Internet connection or computer this should work.

For those who might want to do something similar here's the workflow:
(1) copy audio file(s) from audio recorder's microSD card to my Western Digital MyPassport
Wi-Fi hard drive Pro
(2) insert my SanDisk iXpand flash drive in USB port on the MyPassport drive
(3) copy audio file(s) to the iXpand
(4) insert iXpand into iPad and go to iXpand "View Files" menu
(5) select file(s) and press share icon.
(6) import iaudio file(s) into LumaFusion!

Actually, with the newer WD MyPassport Pro drive I could have microSD card AND the iXpand drive both plugged in at same time and use the MyCloud app to copy the files from the microSD directly to the iXpand, bypassing the WD drive completely!

I added information to the top link of my message above. I prefer to minimize the number of devices that require batteries. They are too bred. :ugeek:

Lumaluke, as a result of your help I've made a video describing the steps I use with a link to another video that demonstrates my process: https://youtu.be/52gueotLbP8.

Thanks for the help!

Since yesterday I also have a Ixpand drive.
It would be much nicer if i could access the Ixpand drive directly from Luma Fushion.

I have a couple questions about the WD My Passport Pro wifi drive you’re talking about above, if someone who owns one might be able to answer.

I see that the drive is smart enough to do auto-backups from SD cards — plug the SD card in to the reader, and the drive automatically copies whatever is not already on the drive from the SD card. I’ve seen on YouTube that folks use it to make incremental backups from their SD cards in the field. That’s great, but is it also smart enough to copy files from, say, a Tascam or Zoom audio recorder? My Tascam recorder saves .wav files onto an SD card; if I could get the files automatically from that SD card to the WD drive, that would be awesome.

Second question is, can I then use the My Cloud app to import those .wav files from the WD drive to my iPad or iPhone for editing in LumaFusion? (I guess I’m asking if the My Cloud app supports “open in” functionality of iOS.)

My objective is to be able to elminate the need for a computer at any step along the way of production.

If anyone knows the answers to these questions, I’d be most grateful if you could share!

Thanks!
Dex

So, I’ve answered my own question; I went ahead and ordered one, knowing that it’s pretty easy to return things to Amazon if you’re not happy with them.

I’ve just gotten it, and am about to head off to a shoot, but did run a quick test; it imported the audio files from my Tascam’s SD card; it just imported the whole file structure over to the WD Drive. Cool! But it seems that I have to download the file from the My Passport Pro to the local My Cloud app before I can access the share feature to open in LumaFusion. Is that anyone else’s experience? As I said, I haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but this is what it seems to be requiring of me.

Anyway, thought I’d share what I knew. Hope this is helpful.

- Dex
