Hi there,

In assembling my video I have found that one of my crossover transitions I have been able to increase its duration by pulling on its handles (which I want) whereas every other similar transition in the video I can’t do that. There are some where I want to do that but can’t and I’m not sure if that’s to do with the clips either side or the transition.

Any guidance would be appreciated and I attach a couple of screen grabs to illustrate.

Jules

Try expanding the time line and see if that helps

In a related question, does a transition change the duration of the video in any way? I usually add them last and sometimes find that it throws off the timing with the soundtrack later in the project.

Errrr

I should know the answer to that

I’ve asked the developers

Generally if you can’t stretch a transition it’s because there is no extra source material available at the beginning or end of one of the clips before and after. Although you might expect it the transition and clips won’t slide along the timeline to solve this problem because that would change the timing of the project.
You can often fix this by using the clip slider tool to allow more room for a transition.

To answer your suggestions, stretching the timeline makes no difference.

I though transitions where simply a fade out and a fade in between clips and made no difference to the length of clips so if clips have no expanding room why would it make a difference?

I have never used the clip slider before so will have to experiment and I will also play around finding two clips where I can manually adjust the transition duration and report back.

Meanwhile, I would be interested to hear what the developers have to say.

Thanks

Here's the official answer:

'By default yes it can, if the media on either side isn't trimmed enough to play through the transition it will be trimmed to provide enough media. That can be turned off in Preferences by turning off the "Ripple Main Track for Transition Insert" option. With that off, the transition can't be added unless there is enough media, except if the transition is added between the last two clips in the timeline. Note, adding a transition to the head or tail of a clip doesn't change the duration at all'

Ok, thanks for that. That is what I went on to discover but I could not find a suitable way of describing it. I was able to insert an expandable transition between two clips as shown below but trying to explain the clip criteria to explain why I could do it here was beyond my headspace at the time!
