Does LumaFusion support MXF files? I haven’t been successful trying to import them.

Hi Nsawchyn

No it doesn’t

What do you normally use to play them with IOS?

I don’t. Normally I edit with Final Cut Pro on my iMac desktop. I was hoping to become more mobile using LumaFusion on the iPad, but if I have to go to my desktop to convert MXF to MOV then what’s the point?

Is there an iOS app that I could use to do the conversion on the iPad maybe?

Then again, getting the iPad to read the camera cards is the real obstacle, isn’t it.

Thanks for replying, Dave. Appreciated.

Cheers,

Norm

Hi Nsawchyn

I’ve been googling and can’t find anything unfortunately

If I’m honest some of the Mac conversion programs look ‘a bit dodgy’

Will your equipment shoot in an iPad compatible format? (This may also be more useful when v2 of LF comes out later in the year)?

Hi Dave.

It’s my colleague’s camera I have to work with. It’s a Sony PXW Z190. Apparently it only shoots in MXF format. And there’s still the issue of reading the camera card which is very difficult if not impossible with the iPad.

As great as LumaFusion is (and I love it) it just shows that it (and the iPad) aren’t really ready for prime time. It works very well with all my consumer gear but drops the ball when dealing with professional stuff. I hope someday to be able to do more than just my “home videos” for YouTube. I’d like to do real work on it.

I was looking forward to the next update - version 2.0. I thought maybe the XML capabilities would change things for me - make it possible to rough cut on the iPad then move it all to Final Cut for finishing - but in order to do that I have to be able to work with these original camera files on the iPad. Not looking likely right now, is it.

Hi Norm

I’m not a developer, so never say never (it could be an Apple limitation)

I will contact the developers

There are a couple avenues we are working on that could provide proxy editing workflows so you can edit supported proxies in Lumafusion and export to FCPX to access full res iOS unsupported formats, but we are not quite there yet.

One solution might be using Gnarbox 2.0 (when it comes out) to generate proxies, but we have some other possibilities as well.

Ok. Now we’re on to something. Turns out the Sony Z190 can record duplicate proxy files to a separate card. I believe they are either MOV or MP4. If I can read that card, which I should be able to since it’s the same SD card I use in my Canon cyber shot consumer camera, then I would be able to work with those files. Then I just need to export an XML to FCP and relink to the MXF files. As soon as I get the update to 2.0 I’ll get the XML add-on and run a test.

When will that be, huh, when can I get it, huh?

Thanks for an interesting discussion.

Norm
