I really need to be able to view and select from a larger amount of raw footage than I want to store on my iPad Pro. Is the WD My Passport Pro as good in real life as it looks on paper?

Hi Vidiot

I've been using one for a while with no problems

I also use my Synology NAS

Obviously the 'portable' bit of the Passport is a massive plus. It's got good battery life too for a portable NAS

Does it import well from LumaFusion 1.5? How fast is it? Is it practical for 1080p? 4K?

Unless I’m mistaken, you have to import the media to the iDevice; you can’t leave the clips on the WD drive and edit from there, as you might with an external drive on a desktop system.

I’d love to be wrong, though!

Yes, you’re correct Dex

You still have to import to edit

I realize that. On a typical project, I might have over a hundred video clips on file, but I might use less than 20 of them in a project. Being able to preview all the clips and import just the ones that I need would be highly useful to me so long as the previewing from the WiFi hard drive are smooth and the import times for what I use are not too slow.

Yes it will allow you to preview them, it’s plenty fast enough

I went ahead and ordered the 4TB one. $197 at B&H. It looks very cool. Hopefully it will be up to my expectations.

I’ve also ordered one — a 2TB from Amazon. Looking forward to getting it into my workflow!

Ok, the WD drive is working, but everything on my iPad feels really sluggish and unresponsive when it is connected. Is that normal?

Edit: Ok, switching to just one wifi band helped. Also, I think the app was populating it’s cache. It seems much better now. Video downloads are still pretty slow though.
